Nobody quits retinol because it stopped working

They quit in week three, when their face is flaking and they have somewhere to be.

Retinol is the one thing the entire skincare internet agrees on. Dermatologists recommend it. Every listicle ranks it first. If you've spent any time reading about fine lines, you've been told to use it.

So you buy some. And then somewhere around week two or three, the part nobody puts in the headline arrives: the flaking around your nose, the tight patches, the makeup that suddenly sits badly. You look, briefly, worse than when you started.

You're told this is normal. Push through. Buffer it with moisturiser. Use it twice a week and build up.

Some people do exactly that and come out the other side happy. A lot of people don't. The bottle ends up in a drawer, and there's a faint sense of having failed at the easy step.

A product you stop using in week three is not a very effective product.

That's worth sitting with for a second. Skincare only does anything if you keep using it. Consistency isn't a nice-to-have on top of the active — for most people it is the active.

Which reframes the question. Instead of "what's the strongest thing I can put on my face", the more useful question is: what will I actually still be using in three months?

That's the gap this serum is built for.

2% Bidens Pilosa, and no retinol at all

Bidens Pilosa is a plant extract used in skincare as a gentler alternative to retinol. Our serum is built around it at 2%, with vitamin C and sea buckthorn for antioxidant support, hyaluronic acid and aloe for hydration, and jojoba, rosehip and mango seed butter to nourish.

It's formulated to soften the appearance of fine lines, refine the look of texture, and even out the appearance of dark spots. Our manufacturer lists it as suitable for all skin types, and the direction is simply: a few drops on a cleansed face, morning and/or evening. No two-nights-a-week ramp.

The formula is certified Ecocert COSMOS Natural — 99% natural origin, 24% organic origin — and it's vegan, gluten free and nut free.

What we're not claiming

This is the part most pages skip, so we'll be direct.

We are not claiming this works as well as retinol. There's no head-to-head study behind this product. Anyone telling you their plant alternative matches prescription retinoids is guessing, and so would we be.

We are not claiming it's a treatment. It's a cosmetic serum. It works on how skin looks. It won't treat a skin condition, and we won't imply otherwise.

We are not showing you before-and-afters. We don't have any that we took ourselves.

What we're claiming is narrower and, we think, more useful: a gentle, well-formulated, certified-natural serum for the appearance of fine lines and texture, that you can use daily without planning around it.

The fair questions

"If it's gentle, is it doing anything?"

Fair. Gentle and useless are not the same thing, but we can't resolve that for you with a claim — only with the formula, which is published in full on the product page.

What we'd say is this: an active you tolerate and use daily has a better chance than a stronger one sitting in a drawer.

"How is this different from bakuchiol?"

It's a different plant. Bakuchiol comes from babchi seed and is the retinol alternative you'll see most often. This formula uses Bidens Pilosa instead, at 2%.

We're not going to rank them against each other — we haven't tested both.

"I have sensitive skin."

Our manufacturer lists it as suitable for all skin types. But it's fragranced — a soft rose and geranium aroma from natural essential oils, which means it contains geraniol, citronellol, linalool and citral.

If fragranced skincare reliably upsets your skin, this isn't your serum, and we'd rather tell you now than after you've paid.

"How long does a bottle last?"

30 ml, used as a few drops once or twice a day. For most people that's a couple of months, though it depends how heavy-handed you are.

One honest note

SOLENNEA is new. There are no reviews on this page because there are no customers yet, and inventing them isn't something we're willing to do.

When we've used this ourselves for long enough to have an opinion worth reading, we'll write it up — including anything we don't like about it.
